Be a better mother: drink milk!

Woman's Realm / 15 July 1961

It’s interesting that you see an advert for a non-branded foodstuff such as milk in this era without seeing a Marketing Board endorsing it, but I suspect the Milk Marketing Board was responsible for this piece of emotional blackmail.

Sweet-Eatin’ Kelloggs

Woman's Realm / 15 July 1961

Nope, not an April Fool, but a reminder of how times have changed!

Tango

Woman's Realm / 15 July 1961

I can’t say that this copy scans particularly well, but then I was lucky enough to live through the Tango adverts of the 1990s, so I’m spoilt.

The Heinz Definition of Motherhood

Woman's Weekly / 11th July 1969

Ah, the Pandora’s Box that is child rearing. Obviously, it would have been in Heinz’s interests to promote their foods as the ideal weaning solution, and it’s interesting that these foods still cause controversy today, as what was reported as a link between industrially-produced baby food to childhood obesity in the UK media, actually, erm, isn’t. However, the main point I have about this advert is that copy which is ostensibly intended to reassure new mothers actually provokes anxiety in me; a clever skill!

Birds Eye Frozen Beef

Woman's Weekly / 27th June 1969

You can still get Birds Eye Frozen Beef, of course, and although this ad is aimed at housewives, this product is now mainly aimed at the elderly or those living alone. Although I can appreciate how helpful it can be to have meat in small portions (I’m a devotee of Waitrose Easy To Cook), the frozen stuff is never quite as nice, in my opinion!

Why don’t we have more adverts for cream nowadays, eh? Cream is great.

Sutherlands

Woman's Weekly / 11th July 1969

Ah, potted beef. I can still taste the memory of it on buttered toast, and it’s probably no mistake that it’s being marketed here as a kids’ food. The tablecloth is a little something for Mum, even if she’s an army wife!

VG Foodstores

Woman / 17th August 1973

I thought we’d leap 8 years into the future from the last post, and wallow in VG Foodstores nostalgia. My mum was a fan of ‘Waistline’ salad cream, as she was perpetually on a diet. Check out the ’70s diet, though; chopped ham, baked beans, and not a vegetable in sight! Although convenience stores still sell a lot of this stuff, they also have pretensions towards being greengrocers, a consequence of public worries over health and the demise of the traditional greengrocer.

We Must Have Lots More Cheese

Another ad in this excellent series!

Kit-zyme

Woman's Weekly / 26th March 1965

I presume this was a precursor to vitamins and the like being added to pet food, but what’s really interesting is that Phillips Yeast Products are still with us, and still in Park Royal!
