Gypsy Creams

Strawberries and Cream, my arse.

Woman's Weekly / 23rd May 1969

A Happy New Year to all my readers. Now the holiday celebrations are over, we traditionally have to give our wallets a rest and look for more frugal desserts. The makers of Angel Delight knew this, hence the rather wild claims of this advert. I’ve tasted Strawberry Angel Delight, and I can’t say that strawberries and cream leapt to mind. Perhaps we need to wish really hard…

That dessert looks more like cream with strawberry anyway.

I’m surprised they didn’t suggest putting the Angel Delight on the strawberries…

I have to say that I do still have a soft spot for chocolate Angel Delight… ooh and Dream Topping. Mmmmm… Dream Topping!

Angel Delight was new in the late sixties. It was the Johnny Come Lately / New Kid on the Block of powdered desserts. Long standing Daddy of them all, which we loved in the 50s, was Bird’s Instant Whip. Is that still on sale? Not seen it for years. Butterscotch was best. You could add water or milk depending on your position on the social scale. ;-)) They were all descendants of Blancmange of course which we had weekly at school…

Looks like they’ve tried to create a Venn diagram effect between the two glasses, by drawing a continuation of the right side of the left glass over the left side of the glass on the right. Very strange.
