This is a profoundly misguided advert, and heaven help the poor women who decided to send off for the C.D. Indicator! I’ve got no idea what they mean by ‘mechanical’ or ‘chemical’ methods of contraception either, given that the only methods that I can think of are barrier or hormonal. I’d love to see what they thought was a ‘mechanical’ method though: the mind boggles!

Apparently chemical contraceptives would be spermicides and mechanical would be an IUD, though Google shows some sites to class condoms as “mechanical” contraception too…

Ah, they’re using the ‘purely physical’ definition of mechanical for condoms, although some IUDs release hormones as well. Simon’s right, though, it’s very emotive language, given that their definition of ‘chemical’ also covers normal hormones! Looks like they were seeking to exploit ignorance…

Aha! Thanks! I wonder if there was any leeway for sperm hanging about in the uterus for a day or so?

The irony, of course, being that so many women using this “method” (as opposed to those nasty “chemical” or “mechanical” ones) would indeed find motherhood by accident. I still get irked at this sort of thing, because there are people who still preach or subscribe to these methods.

Mechanical methods are barrier ones, chemical ones are hormonal! Just nastier sounding terminology.
