Woman's Weekly / 7th May 1965

So, yeah. As icanhascheezburger.com have highlighted before, funny captions for animal pictures are nothing new. Although this editorial tells me more about Princess Margaret’s sham of a marriage than I ever wanted to know, the centenarian feature is quite startling, given that it’s talking about people born in 1865!

I’m particularly delighted at the existence of a Deciduous Fruit Board (a name to conjure with). There were some fab arms of the state pre-Thatcher. The Milk Marketing Board, the Deciduous Fruit Board, the Manpower Services Commission, the Coal Commission, the Layer Cake Authority…

Fascinating how Women’s Weekly are promoting a trade arrangement, isn’t it? I presume that it died along with the Deciduous Fruit Board (makes me feel hungry), which is a shame, as they’d be a lot busier nowadays. According to this (http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/mortality-ageing/population-estimates-of-the-very-elderly/2010/sum-eve-2010.html), the number of centenarians has risen from 300 in 1965 to 12,640 in 2010! Even in 1980, there were 2,500, which is an increase of 2,200 in 15 years. To be honest, I think WW has a conservative estimate, given that the number for 1970 is 1,080.
