I remember smokers’ toothpaste being a commonly advertised product when I was a child, but it seems to have been eclipsed by general tooth-whitening products nowadays. This is quite likely down to smoking being in decline in the UK, and, with the series ‘Mad Men’ reminding us that a hearty cough used to be the normal start to the day for many adults in the Western world, I thought this was a timely ad. However, it seems like we’ve exported this pleasure to developing countries such as China and India. Well done us.

I wonder when it changed from powder to paste? On the subject of bicarb, my uncle (in his 70s) used to use bicarb and lemon juice to clean his teeth. He used to claim you could get all sorts of dirt off your teeth that way. With a fair bit of enamel as well, I’ll wager…

I used bicarb last week when I realised that Janine had taken the toothpaste with her and I had no other option than to leave my teeth furry. It was quite refreshing. Wouldn’t want to do it every day, though.

I’ve got some of this in my bathroom, they still make it! Other half swears by it, although I don’t use it – I am slightly scared of what the hell it does to get stains off so easily.

I think this must be pretty similar to the pink powder that dentists use to clean your teeth after a checkup. It’s still available in many mainstream stores:

My mother (her again) used it for years, and was quite disappointed when she found it was getting quite hard to get hold of (ie they don’t stock it in her local supermarket any more.) She’s now converted to Arm & Hammer and enjoys the tingle from the bicarb in it. Thought I’d share that with you.
