What was behind the obsession with giving away tablecloths in the late ’60s? Were British women going through some sort of tablecloth crisis?

You’re right, it is practical! And judging from the ‘rayon and flax’ mix, probably cheap to produce, as well.

More likely one product started giving away tablecloths and their sales started to rise meaning other companies started jumping onto the tablecloth wagon.
Quite a good giveaway, I think, nice and practical.
