TCP

Woman's Weekly / 6th June 1969

Now here, ladieesssngentlemeeen, is a typical late ’60s family. The little girl in the big pants is my favourite, and I’m fairly sure that the same girl appears in this advert, although it could be her sister, given the different haircuts, and that the Elastoplast girl looks a bit older. What do you reckon?

Pimples and spots are the same thing surely? That’s just cheating!
Despite not coming across any for at least the last 20 years, I still remember the taste of TCP. My Grandma would make me gargle it when I had a sore throat or if I had toothache.

The difference between a spot and a pimple, as I understand it, is that a pimple does not become a spot until it develops a head. Could be wrong, but that’s the terminology used in my family.

Duckling < Duck
Lamb < Sheep
Pimple < Spot.

Gargling TCP for toothache? I suppose it would wash out any food causing irritation…

At my junior school you were made to gargle with TCP if you went to the medical room claiming you had a sore throat. Worked as a disincentive for me!

Tanya – I think because it’s a mild antiseptic and as a child I couldn’t swallow paracetamol tablets, even when they were broken into small pieces.

Flashback to the “nurse” at primary school. This was a couple of top year girls who volunteered to sit out playtime and wait for kids with injuries to come to them, to wipe them with TCP and put a plaster on. They seemed quite grown up to me at the time, weird to think they were only 10.

Not sure what TCP does for a sprain though?

“Not sure what TCP does for a sprain though?”

…makes it smell of TCP to distract you from the pain?

I was a bit taken aback the first time I came across TCP when visiting Simon lol. It tastes horrible Bleh. I still smell it if I think about it. we haven’t had any in the house for ages now.
