Gypsy Creams

Andrex

Woman's Weekly / 9th May 1969

According to the official Andrex site, the now famous puppy ads were introduced in 1972, so this is probably the last campaign before that runaway success. I’m rather dismayed that they now have dumped on that history from a great height with their new CGI puppies (UGH), but the general message hasn’t really changed. It’s interesting that the campaign now only hints at the softness and strength, because presumably consumers are now well aware of those qualities, and presents the product as one of the many small things which improve the quality of life.

“Cushioned strength”.

In other words: nice on your bum, and you’re not likely to put your fingers through.

Dont you think that when you look at old films you think “thats clever the way they did that” for example getting the puppies to run with a line of toilet paper (off the top of my head example) ?
now you look at the new films like with the Andrex puppies
and think “oh thats just CGI” ….yawn!
Sadly I cant quite get excited about any new film with special effects now as its “oh CGI again”

A childhood friend was obsessed with the whole subject of bogroll when we were kids. As a birthday present for his mum, he unrolled a (Jeyes Bronco Izal) roll of hard toilet paper and wrote a joke on each leaf, rolling it up again and putting it back into service. The family were (supposedly) entertained by the potential for ‘a laugh a wipe’ . He said. I am sceptical of this but the story became legend in our house. I am not making this up.

It sounds like an entertaining present, and reminds me of the ‘Inspirational Toilet Roll’ joke in Open All Hours.
