This all raises the question: what WAS Mrs Earl of Lewisham doing before to strengthen her family’s teeth?

I was momentarily confused as to how the Earl of London’s wife would be called Mrs Earl of London rather than the Countess London.

Fortunately, panel (1), where Mrs Earl of London takes somebody’s children up a flight of stairs in order test the strength of their teeth – possibly by pushing the pair of them back down the stairs, it isn’t clear – helped me understand that the woman is actually just impersonating a Countess. Badly. And it’s a treasonable offence, so she ought to think on.

“what WAS Mrs Earl of Lewisham doing before to strengthen her family’s teeth?”

Simply cleaning away the food particles, presumably. With a brush loaded with non-flouride toothpaste.
