The Clever Homemaker’s Competition

Woman's Realm / 18th March 1967

A rather clever competition dealing with the main problem of a consumer society: where to put it all. It’s doubtful that people before the late ’60s had storage as a real issue. As a child of the ’80s, I grew up with overflowing cupboards, and am currently using this post as an excuse to avoid dealing with the large amount of crap upstairs. Probably the best thing we could do for our children is to teach them about the folly of continually buying stuff to make themselves feel better, isn’t it? Yeah, I don’t think that’s likely to happen either…

What is a lumber room and why is it in the loft?
We have loads of crap in our house too (and a houseful of my stuff in storage in the US waiting to be shipped over to the UK). Poor Juliette doesn’t have her own space really :( Granted half of it could be thrown out but alot of it is things like Simon’s music stuff, dvd’s waiting for the shelves to be put up in the living room and various other things that could be put somewhere if we had shelves/wardrobes ect.

I have no idea what a lumber room is: we certainly never had one! Also: shelves, wardrobes etc are definitely the way to go…

We need a bunch of new wardrobes/chest of drawers ect. all ours were either Simon’s when he was a kid or from his granny and parents. They were fine as a temporary thing but of course we never got around to getting new stuff lol. Keep meaning to go to Ikea but need to get organised enough to actually get there since it’s about an hour and a half to get there on the M25 (so you know it’ll take longer).

I’ll have to look up what a lumber room is. I’m curious as to why we needed them back then but now now.
