Bloody kids!

Woman's Realm / 6th October 1967

Apart from the comedy value in the copy here, this is an interesting change of approach from Sanatogen: empathetic rather than condemnatory, as in this ad from 10 years previously. It also gives the lie to the common complaint that children are more trouble than they used to be, because this isn’t how the advertising industry would talk about children nowadays. And yes, this is yet another excuse for women to get drunk, dressed up as a medicinal preparation. We’ve been here before.

What is “tonic wine”? Real wine with “tonic” elements? Like the kinds of vitamins and minerals they use to “fortify” processed breakfast cereals, but in wine? I just wouldn’t use the word “restorative” if that’s what it is.

I think the idea that these wines are a ‘tonic’ was simply an early form of advertising bollocks from the 1920s. According to Wikipedia, the word ‘fortified’ simply refers to stuff like caffeine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-end_fortified_wine. I’m pretty sure no extra vitamins or minerals are present :)

Listen women, stop nagging and complaining! Just get pissed, it’ll make life much more bearable for all involved.
