Woman's Own: 15th July 1967
I know, but I couldn't resist. Here's another attempt to sell nursing as anything other than a noble vocation, with salaries of £700 being waved in front of young women. Just two years later, an average weekly wage for women of £20 was being quoted in this title, which makes £1040 a year. So the nursing wage isn't necessarily *that* amazing. You might get 6 weeks holiday a year, but a 42 hour working week means that you need it!
Or, how about teaching?
teaching, nursing, or civil servant -- until 1971 any woman had to be vouched for BY A MAN to get 'hire purchase' ie buy goods on credit. He could be your imbecile younger brother, as long as he had gonads he clearly understood finance which would only trouble your pretty little head...
Thanks, Lil. It's easy to forget how recently these stupid attitudes still held sway! My generation is the first to grow up with any sort of assumption that the sexes are equal...
"She is a really important person in this modern world, and is treated as such." Yeah, because that's how it works...
