Heh heh! I love the naivety in assuming that women who live in London have some unique insight into dress sense. Evidence to the contrary is plentiful, and I've no doubt that the Fifties weren't any different in that regard. However, it's often the case that ambiguous sexuality is more tolerated in a large city: after all, what IS going on in that illustration?

There is nothing wrong with cardigans.
PS: London Girl is not wrong. This is good advice.
What's going on in the picture is that the seated woman is using a chalk hem marker to mark the length to which the standing woman's skirt will be hemmed. The marker puffs out a little bit of chalk when the bulb is squeezed.
Thanks for the technical explanation, as I didn't actually know what that gadget was. I was being slightly facetious, though :)
I often like to take my stole dancing in the evenings.
