Woman's Own: 21st March 1970
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. Of course, telling women that they're not fully made up without a glass of booze in their hand is an approach that most drink companies would still like to employ, I'd wager. However, the alarming rise in drink-related injuries and illness amongst young women has forced them to add a reminder about drinking responsibly to their still-glamourous ads; a magnificent example, to my mind, of pissing into the wind. (Something young women may be at risk of doing after an excess of whatever's being advertised.) The causes of excess drinking in a society are always deep-seated and complex, but it's interesting that The Authorities only started to get really concerned about it when women got in on the act...
That's probably because for cigs and a lot of alcohol, there isn't much else to sell it on. Jack Daniels tastes good, so that's what the ads promote, but it's harder to do the same for something like vodka.

I really don't trust that guy on the left.

> Jack Daniels tastes good
That's your opinion. :P
Yeah, drugs are all "lifestyle". I would like to see an ad saying straight out, "It's great! You will be wasted in minutes!"
>That's your opinion. :P
And that of the ads which promote it: it was just an example of how whiskey/brandy/burbon (and wine) are marketed differently from other alcohol, because they're known to be the most pleasurable neat :)
Also, that guy on the left DOES look sinister...

If the bloke on the left had a cartoon think bubble, I imagine something filthy would be going on in it.

It seems crazy when you see it spelt out in an ad - but people do it...people use booze as make-up...
Also, adverts nowadays won't type it out, but look at the ads for alcohol or cigarettes - nearly all of the campagnes work on a basis of "this independent/trendy/sexy/... person could be you".
